This very special loose powder compact by ‘Melissa’ is a rare find with the petit point centrepiece & dates to the period c1930-1954. It features quality engine turning throughout & comes with the original powder puff. It is signed ‘Made in England’ below the mirror. The centrepiece is under a protective covering, clasps, hinges & spring-loaded door work perfectly & the mirror provides a clear & accurate reflection. Dimensions: 8.5cm
Melissa, a British brand made by Searchlight Products (Melissa) Ltd, was located in London & sadly much of the history of the brand has been lost over the years. Research shows that many of Melissa’s loose powder compacts that had full inner lids were made between the 1930s & 1950s, with this compact pictured in a 1954 advertisement. (source: tvcs)
